Equity benchmarks closed higher on the first day September month, largely driven by auto and pharma stocks despite subdued economic growth.
The 30-share BSE Sensex was up 161.74 points at 31,892.23 and the 50-share NSE Nifty gained 56.50 points at 9,974.40.

The market breadth was strong as about 1,588 shares advanced against 993 declining shares on the BSE.

The crucial resistance for Nifty spot is now seen at 10050 and above this 10125. Support for the immediate term is now placed at 9940 and next support will be 9850.
