SGX Nifty indicates a flat opening for Indian markets

SGX Nifty is at 11863 levels, down 1 point.  Expect more volatility today as the expiry of derivative contracts for May series sees both sided movements as we end one of the most volatile expires at the highest ever level for Nifty.

Nifty saw another volatile day with a downward bias as weak global cues saw marginal selling from both foreign & local institutions as Nifty grappled with 11900.  IT was the only gaining sector while selling was accentuated in metals, PSU banks & auto stocks.

Global Market: Asian markets opened weak another day as the overnight US cues saw sentiment remain subdued. The Japanese Nikkei traded down 150 points in early trade as a fall in yields & US$ weakness hurt the Japanese currency. For today, expect more color from Chinese export data, which could see some pullback in stocks as Chinese economic growth data for May has been weak.

US Market:US indices close in the red for another day reducing intraday losses in last hour as short covering sees Dow Jones recover from down 400 points to close down 220 points. Bond yields hit 2.20% before recovering to close unchanged at 2.25%. Oil prices see sharp sell-off even as President Trump threatens Europe over Iran sanctions.

FII/DII Data: In yesterday’s trading session, FIIs sold 304cr worth of stock in cash, whereas DIIs sold 190cr worth of stock. In the derivative market, FIIs sold 734cr of Index futures and bought 2493cr worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs sold 792cr worth of stock futures and sold 16cr stock options.

FII View: In Index future segment, FIIs index future long/short ratio dropped below 1x level for the first time in the May series, the ratio currently stands at 0.9x with a marginal addition of short positions. However, on the Index option’s front, they squared off short positions in the call options to the tune of 15948 contracts and added buying positions in put options to the tune of 17924 contracts, indicating an expectation of a volatile trading session.
