Markets open lower; realty, media stocks gain

The sectoral trend was mixed with Nifty Realty and Media leading gains, while the Nifty Bank and Private Bank indices led losers.

Indian benchmark indices made a weak start on Wednesday. The Sensex was down 95 points at 40,152 and the Nifty traded below the 11,900 level. (9.27AM)

The sectoral trend was mixed with Nifty Realty and Media leading gains, while the Nifty Bank and Private Bank indices led losers.

Nifty Realty was trading higher by 1.8% led by Sobha and IB Real Estate. Nifty Media was up 1.4% driven by ZEEL and Zee Media trading higher by 4% and 3%, respectively. Nifty Metal also traded higher propelled by Hindalco and Vedanta.

Shares of ZEEL traded higher as the board of directors of the company gave an in-principle nod to reappoint Punit Goenka as MD & CEO for a period of five years.

On the other hand, shares of Titan slumped 7% after reporting subdued numbers for Q2FY20.

Top gainers on the Nifty included ZEEL and Sun Pharma, while Titan Company and Bharti Infratel were among the top losers. 

On the currency front, the rupee opened lower at 70.79/$ on Wednesday.
