Sensex, Nifty trade higher; Metal, banking stocks gain

Infratel, Yes Bank, and Bharti Airtel were among top gainers, while Zee, Gail, and NTPC among top losers.

Equity benchmark indices opened higher on Tuesday led by gains in Yes Bank, HDFC Bank, and Infosys.

The Sensex was up 106 points at 38,706 and the Nifty50 rose 22 points at 11,620. The market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1,012 shares advancing, 541 shares declining, and 553 remaining unchanged.

Among sectoral indices, only Nifty media index was trading in the red. The Nifty PSU index topped the list of gainers, up 0.70%, followed closely by Nifty Metal index, FMCG, and auto.

In the broader market, the BSE MidCap index had gained 65 points to trade at 14,731, while the BSE SmallCap index was ruling at 14,475, up 51 points.

Infratel, Yes Bank, and Bharti Airtel were among top gainers, while Zee, Gail, and NTPC among top losers.

The rupee opened marginally higher by 3 paise at 69.37 against the US dollar amid the decline in crude oil prices.

Shares of Airtel rose 1% after the company’s revenue from its Indian mobile business grew at its fastest pace in three years and margin improved in a quarter when the telecom operator changed strategy to turn around its fortunes.

Shares of Marico jumped 7% on the NSE. The company registered 18% yoy growth in its PAT for the fourth quarter of FY19 at Rs213cr, while FY19 PAT rose 14%yoy at Rs930cr.

The Volatility gauge, India VIX is down 3.09% at 25.61.

The most active stocks on the NSE are Reliance Industries, Yes Bank, and ICICI Bank.
